U.S. safety regulators have opened a probe into Amazon -owned robotaxi venture Zoox after two of its autonomous SUVs braked suddenly and were rear-ended by motorcyclists. In both cases, motorcyclists collided into the Zoox vehicles, which led to minor injuries. NHTSA said it confirmed each of the Zoox cars were operating in autonomous mode when the incidents occurred. Both of the collisions took place during the daytime and within the operational design limits of Zoox's autonomous system. Last March, the agency said it would investigate Zoox's self-certification in 2022 that its robotaxi met federal safety standards.

Since the recall, at least 20 Tesla vehicles have been involved in crashes in which the system was thought to be in use, according to a filing on the NHTSA's website. The "recall remedy" probe follows a three-year investigation by the agency that found safety issues with Tesla Autopilot contributed to at least 467 collisions and 14 deaths from January 2018 through August 2023. The NHTSA is seeking detailed crash data from the electric vehicle maker since the agency issued the recall update on Autopilot, including data and video stored in or streamed from its cars and retained by the company. The company hasn't disclosed how many jobs in its Autopilot and vehicle-safety engineering teams may have been cut. For about a decade, CEO Elon Musk has been promising that Tesla is on the cusp of a self-driving breakthrough.

A section of Interstate 95 in Connecticut reopened on Sunday morning after a fiery accident last week damaged an overpass and shut down the highway, a major artery along the East Coast. Workers spent 80 hours repairing the road and demolishing the damaged bridge said Ned Lamont, the governor of Connecticut, in a statement on Sunday. There were no serious injuries in the crash, but the damage caused by the intense heat from the burning fuel was so significant that Governor Lamont declared a state of emergency. The zebra was one of four that escaped on April 28 from a trailer near North Bend in Washington state, Regional Animal Services of King County said in a media release. While the other three zebras were captured within a few hours, a mare remained on the loose. CNN —Nineteen people have been killed after a highway collapsed in China’s Guangdong province on Wednesday, according to the country’s state broadcaster, CCTV. A section of the express highway connecting Meizhou City and Dapu City in Guangdong Province collapsed at around 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday, leaving eighteen cars trapped, CCTV reported. Southern China has been bombarded with heavy rain in recent weeks. Guangdong province, an economic powerhouse home to 127 million people, has seen widespread flooding, which has forced more than 110,000 people to relocate, state media reported, citing the local government. The floods have killed at least four people in Guangdong, including a rescue worker, state news agency Xinhua reported Monday.

Local news footage and social media images showed scenes of chaos: Members of the clashing groups threw punches and wrestled each other to the ground. At about 3:30 a.m., officers wedged themselves between the groups, and the violence began to de-escalate. As the campus awoke early Wednesday, students and other curious onlookers leaned against the barricades at the encampment, silently taking videos or snapping photos. A police helicopter continued to hover overhead, and a large Palestinian flag at the center of the camp swayed in the wind.
